PROJECT MANAGEMENT – VMFRP
When: 2024/25
Client: Lower Murray Water

Overview: The Victorian Murray Floodplain Restoration Project (VMFRP) is dedicated to reintroducing much-needed water to high-value floodplains along the Murray River. Without this intervention, these iconic landscapes risk continued decline, along with the native trees, animals, and plant species that depend on them.
Over time, floodplains and wetlands have become increasingly disconnected from natural water flows due to population growth and river regulation.
The VMFRP aims to remove blockages that prevent water from reaching key creeks and floodplains, while implementing systems to manage water more effectively across these landscapes.
This revitalisation effort will help these ecologically significant areas to thrive, even under future dry conditions, ensuring they endure for generations to come.
The VMFRP is being implemented as part of Victoria’s obligations under the Murray–Darling Basin Plan in partnership with Lower Murray Water, Goulburn-Murray Water, Mallee Catchment Management Authority, North Central Catchment Management Authority, Parks Victoria and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. The VMFRP is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

Our role: BPS is engaged as a consultancy partner for the VMFRP, providing support during the project’s initial reset, gateway planning, and review phases. In the reset phase, BPS has been of assistance in refining project objectives and ensuring alignment with the overarching goals of the Murray–Darling Basin Plan, which seeks to restore and sustain the health of this essential water system.
BPS continues to support the program progression to Stage 2 delivery phase, through the development of project schedules, planning for construction readiness, and the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process to help identify risks and improve delivery planning. BPS has also assisted with Traditional Owner engagement to ensure cultural values are respected.
BPS continues to help assess and enhance project management strategies, offering detailed insights to optimise the project’s capacity to meet long-term sustainability goals for the Murray River floodplains.
